Pimpin' out your spoons!
I had to use that title, it won’t get into a national magazine but fish-fighter is a little more edgy. The truth is, you are really pimpin’ out your spoon and this tip can save you money. Fishing is an inexpensive hobby or sport, if you take care of your gear. I have a bad habit of buying spoons and letting them corrode so that they are not as affective as I would like them to be. I was sitting around and decided to play around with some lures, to pimp them out or in better terms, make them a fish magnet. Spoons are my number one “go to lure” and I use them anywhere I fish. They are the perfect fish finder and they are versatile, as far as catching multiple species.
I went to Dave’s Fisherman’s World in Holiday, Florida to buy some lures and started to look around at the items that you can add to your lures to make the rattle, wiggle or tease to attract fish.
I bought several glass rattles that you can insert into soft baits. These rattles make a low pitch sound but they add that extra noise you might need to catch the fish. It’s like adding that cool ring tone to your cell phone so people will notice your taste in music, only this is added to let the fish know that there is a bait fish in the area.
I went into my wonderful fiancé’s nail polish kit and of course I got yelled at, I am sure I am not the only angler with a women that thinks I am obsessed with doing what ever it takes to catch that winning redfish. My choices of spoons are Captain Mike’s spoons, the Huddlespoon and Johnson silver/gold minnow. The Captain Mike’s spoons are great spoons but I find that the red coating on the hook starts to chip off after a few uses. I take the red nail polish and coat the hook again.
This is a positive hobby for young kids; they can experiment with different colors. I have done this several times when my spoons are in really bad shape and I put them in my fresh water tackle. Bass will eat anything in the ponds around the local neighborhoods. I will color the spoons and add a soft plastic trailer to cover a lot of water in these fresh water ponds. As far as the Captain Mike’s spoons that are need of some touch up, I just re-coat the hook and it’s like new. I also do this with spoons that have a false eye and it has been rubbed off.( Captain Mike’ Spoons are quality spoons and I use them a lot, this is just an example of what I use and not in anyway saying these are poor quality spoons.)
Now, as for the rattles, I take super glue and set the rattles on the hook side. The smaller the spoon, I just use one and the bigger the spoon, I might use 2 rattles. One of my favorite spoons is the black nickel color spoon that is deadly, early in the morning; I super glued the rattles to the spoon and found the same color nail polish as the spoon. Once the glue was dry; I coated the rattles with the nickel colored nail polish. You couldn’t tell the difference in color. I took my brother and neighbor’s out and my brother used the spoon with no rattle; my neighbor used the spoon with the rattle. Score: Brother-0 Neighbor-3. I believe this did make a difference seeing that it was windy and the water was choppy. That extra sound brought them in. Keep in mind, I did not come up with this, I owe this tip to a show I watched but they were focusing on using the rattle with a D.O.A shrimp lure. Remember, you can experiment with your lures and you can catch fish. That’s why we see new lures coming out all the time. You never know, you might come up with the next tournament winning lure, so don’t throw your old lures away. This is a way to have fun with fishing on the water and off………Take care and keep fightn’ fish!
