“Man you stink” shouldn’t your artificial lure do the same!

Over the years lure companies have designed numerous scented baits that are made to replace live bait or cut bait. Now, I do use some of these lures but I have several issues with using them. I am an angler that likes to constantly retrieve and cast. I do at times dead stick scented baits, like the Berkley Gulp! but that is only when I know the fish are there. The Berkley Gulp! product does not have the realistic look as some artificial lures have. I like to use the Carolina Lunker Sauce on my lures that have the realistic movement and the sauce gives the lure that extra incentive for the fish to attack it. I have been researching on some new ideas and techniques that have produced nice redfish, trout and snook. Since, from small blue crab and fiddler crabs are the primary diet of a redfish this can help put more redfish in the live well. Below is a step by step list of what you need to make your lures smell like the real thing but you can still have that movement of a real shrimp or crab. I am focusing on shrimp and crab because they move slow on the bottom of a flat or back creek. These bottom dwelling shellfish produce a lot of scent and the Berkley Gulp! will help give your lure that realistic scent every lure needs.

Step #1: What you need-

- Artificial shrimp lure
- Artificial crab lure
- Carolina Lunker Sauce
- Berkley Gulp!
- ¼ jig head
- Pliers

Stinky Lure #1:

The realistic crab and Gulp! combo:

I first buy the 2 inch Berkley Gulp in the shrimp pattern. I cut a small piece off and run it onto the jig as far as I can. I try and buy the same color as the lure I am using.
I then run the artificial crab lure onto the jig. Make sure that you are not over doing the Gulp! because you want to have maximum hook set and hook exposure.

The realistic shrimp and Gulp! combo:

This is the same concept as the crab/Gulp! combo. When I am using this combo I like to use the Old Bay shrimp product. It has great movement and the gold colored pattern is very productive.

The Super stinky scented combo:

Now, if you want maximum scent, you can cover the two lures above with Carolina Lunker Sauce. The reason I do this is because you can jig your lure and the scent will stay onto the lure and not float to the surface. It is a great scented gel for subsurface lures, also. The key is to work your lure slow and run it on the bottom.

I am always trying new things and sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. This experiment did work for me. It gave me the scent I needed and I was able to work my lure slow with a natural presentation. I am sure that I am the only one to come up with the Gulp! and lure combo but I haven’t read about it at all. This trick does work and has produced several fish.

Try it out and remember keep fightn fish!!!!
